Solution · Skills Mapping

Every workforce decision you make is only as good as your skills data

Most organisations don’t know what their people can actually do. They have job titles, tenures, and HRIS tags — not skills. Anthropos maps your workforce capability automatically, so planning, mobility, and development start from something real.

The problem

Why most organisations are flying blind on workforce capability

HRIS systems tell you who people are and what roles they hold. They don’t tell you what people can do. That gap shows up every time you try to make a talent decision.

Your HRIS holds roles, not skills

Job titles and org structure tell you where someone sits — not what they can do. The data you have for workforce planning is structural, not capability-based. Every decision made from it is an assumption.

Self-assessments don’t aggregate

When you ask employees to rate their own skills, you get answers that reflect confidence, culture, and recency bias — not consistent, comparable capability data. You can’t make decisions from it at scale.

No structured taxonomy means no insights

Even when skills are captured, they’re free-text tags with no hierarchy or framework. “Python” and “python3” and “Python scripting” are three different things in your system. You can’t search, filter, or aggregate.

How it works

Two phases that build a complete, structured skills picture

Skills mapping combines automatic extraction from existing data sources with structured employee input — so you get coverage without burdening your team.

1

Auto-extraction from existing sources

Anthropos ingests CVs, HRIS data, and LinkedIn profiles. AI parses the text and maps it to the 60K+ skills taxonomy — no manual tagging, no spreadsheet work. Skills are normalised and structured from the start.

CV · HRIS · LinkedIn
2

Guided employee self-evaluation

Employees review their auto-extracted profile and rate proficiency on each skill using a structured 0–5 scale with anchor descriptions. They can add skills the system missed. The process takes under 15 minutes.

~15 min per employee · No prior training needed
3

Structured skills inventory — ready to act on

The result: every employee has a structured skills profile tied to a shared taxonomy. You can filter by skill, by role, by team, by gap. Workforce Intelligence turns the inventory into aggregated insights.

What changes

What becomes possible when you know what your workforce can do

Skills mapping doesn’t just answer a data question. It changes the quality of every downstream talent decision.

Workforce planning from real capability data
Identify where you have depth, where you have gaps, and where organisational risk is concentrated — by team, by skill area, by role. Planning that starts from what’s real, not what’s assumed.

Internal mobility — find the talent you already have
Search your workforce by skill and proficiency level before opening an external requisition. The right person may already work for you. Skills mapping makes them findable.

L&D spend targeted to confirmed gaps
Stop buying training for skills your people already have. With a structured skills inventory, every L&D investment can be tied to a specific gap — at individual, team, and function level.

Board-level skills reporting — not survey data
When the board or executive team asks about capability in critical skill areas — AI, cybersecurity, strategic thinking — you have an answer that comes from data, not a pulse survey or gut feel.
Use cases

Where skills mapping makes the biggest difference

Skills mapping is the foundation — but the value shows up in specific talent decisions and programmes.

Workforce Planning

Critical skill coverage by function

Identify concentration risk — where critical skills are held by one or two people — and plan hiring or development before it becomes a business problem.

AI Transformation

Where is your workforce on AI skills?

Map the current AI capability baseline across every function. Identify who’s ready to work with AI tools today, who needs development, and where the exposure risk is highest.

Succession Planning

Know your bench — not your best guess

Identify succession candidates based on verified skills proximity to critical roles — not tenure and performance ratings. Know exactly what each candidate needs to close the gap.

Internal Mobility

Match open roles to internal candidates first

Before posting externally, search the skills inventory for employees whose verified capabilities match the role requirements. Reduce time-to-fill and improve retention in one move.

L&D Strategy

Training budgets tied to real gaps

Map the delta between where your workforce is and where your business strategy requires them to be. Allocate development investment to the skills that actually need closing.

M&A Integration

Map acquired team capabilities fast

When you acquire a company or integrate a new team, skills mapping gives you a structured picture of the incoming capability — in days, not months of manual HR work.

Common questions

Frequently asked

What CHROs and HR leaders ask before starting a skills mapping programme.

How long does it take to get a first skills map?
Most organisations get their first structured skills inventory within 30 days. Phase 1 — automatic extraction from CVs and HRIS — takes 1–2 weeks depending on data access. Phase 2 — employee self-evaluation — runs over 2–3 weeks with standard communications. You can phase the rollout by team or function if preferred.
How much work does this require from employees?
Typically 10–15 minutes. Employees review an auto-generated profile built from their CV and existing data, adjust proficiency levels where needed, and add any missing skills. Most find the process straightforward — they’re reviewing and confirming, not starting from scratch.
What if a skill or role isn’t in the taxonomy?
The 60K+ taxonomy covers most roles, but you can extend it. Anthropos Studio allows HR teams or subject matter experts to define custom skills and roles — with proficiency scales and evaluation criteria — that sit alongside the standard taxonomy. Custom skills are integrated into the same structured format and can be used across all downstream features.
How is this different from LinkedIn Skills or our HRIS skills tags?
LinkedIn and HRIS tags are typically self-entered, unstructured, and not tied to a shared proficiency scale. “Python” on one person’s profile and “Python” on another’s may represent entirely different capability levels. Anthropos normalises everything to a shared taxonomy with a 0–5 scale — so you can compare, aggregate, and filter across your entire workforce. That’s not possible with tags.
Is skills mapping the same as skills verification?
No — and the distinction matters. Skills mapping captures and structures what employees claim they can do. Skills verification tests whether they can actually do it, through a 30–45 minute AI Simulation. Mapping is Phase 1–2 of the methodology; verification is Phase 3. You can start with mapping alone — most organisations do — and add verification to priority skill areas when they’re ready.
