Simulation Details:
Stratus Systems is a mid-sized SaaS company specializing in a Digital-Twin platform that helps clients simulate and optimize complex operations, including supply chain logistics, manufacturing workflows, and energy grid management. The platform leverages cloud architecture, AI-driven predictive analytics, and IoT device connectivity to deliver real-time insights, enabling businesses to reduce inefficiencies and improve forecasting. Stratus Systems has experienced rapid growth, expanding its engineering team and earning industry recognition for innovation. However, this growth has created challenges in maintaining team alignment and retaining key technical leaders, especially as competitors aggressively recruit top talent. The company’s success and stability depend on keeping senior engineers who drive critical projects and mentor junior staff.
Step into the role of Vice President of Engineering at Stratus Systems, where you must retain a vital Staff Engineer who has received a lucrative competing offer. Through a series of one-on-one real-time conversations, you will:
- Hold a candid voice/phone call with the engineer to uncover her motivations, including compensation, recognition, workload, and alignment with the company mission.
- Present a data-driven business case to the Chief Financial Officer via chat, negotiating for flexibility within strict budget policies and addressing risks of setting precedents.
- Optionally consult the Chief Executive Officer via chat for strategic support to strengthen your case.
- Return to the engineer with an approved, holistic retention offer that addresses her concerns and secures her commitment to stay.
Your challenge is to balance organizational constraints with the needs of a top performer, using negotiation, business case development, and active listening.
- Engage in one-on-one conversations with each NPC to understand their perspectives and priorities.
- Demonstrate active listening and empathy in discussions with the engineer.
- Build and present a compelling, data-backed business case to the CFO.
- Negotiate a retention package that balances monetary and non-monetary incentives.
- Secure the engineer’s enthusiastic agreement to remain at Stratus Systems.
- Ensure your approach aligns with company policies and strategic goals, mitigating risks to team stability and investor confidence.
